Series Title Contest

I’m giving my readers a chance to win a copy of my book, Reality’s Dawn. How, you ask, do you accomplish that?

I’m in need of a series title for a new book I’m currently editing. Here are the details on what it needs:

  1. It is a series centered around dragons in the Reality World. It is a spin-off from the first series, from the book Reality’s Fire that is about to come out.
  2. It will be at least five books long.
  3. The title needs to have “dragon” in some form or fashion in it.
  4. It needs to avoid being trite.
  5. The atmosphere of the series will be similar to the Reality Chronicles series.
  6. It should avoid using the word “Chronicles” in it, since I have two series with that already used.

Sound easy? Well, if you have a good one, post it in the comments here. If I find one I like and want to use, you’ll win a free copy of Reality’s Dawn, ebook or paperback if within the continental United States. Contest ends midnight on June 3rd. If I don’t like any of the choices, no one wins.

So with that information…GO!

I won your last giveaway so don’t enter me in the drawing. But I wanted to contribute anyway.

What are each book going to be about? If each book will have a different theme, or feature a different character, you could pull that into the title. Like, E.E. Knight’s books are Dragon Champion, Dragon Avenger, Dragon Outcast, Dragon Strike, Dragon Rule, Dragon Fate. (You can kind of tell by the titles how it’s sort of the rise and fall of dragonkind.)

Why not use another word for dragon, like Drake or Drakkon or Drago? And then have your pertinent noun. Drake Flight, Drake Dawn, Dimension of Drakes, etc.

    • Rick says:

      Hi, Kessie,

The characters won’t change a lot in the series. Probably add some here and there, but the core cast will remain the same.

I have written two of the books, started a third, and have given them the tentative titles of:

      The Magic Within
      The Dragon Within
      The Dragon Without

Don’t know yet what book 4 will be about, but have a general idea of where I want book five to end, though I’m not sure yet of how it will get there. I’ll know more on that after writing book four. And after writing book four, I may feel a need to add more books. We’ll see where the whole series arc takes me, but that’s the plan for now.

I will say this. Part of the series arc is that in the first book, you discover the dragons are a hidden race. Most in the Reality’s world think they are legend and myth. And part of the series arc is to reunite the dragons and humans without a bloody war initiating as it did when the dragons went into hiding. Naturally, this does not go smoothly as planned. :) But the idea is that that goal will be obtained in some form or fashion by the end of the series.

Hope that gives you and the others more of an idea. :)

  9. Hey Rick!
I’ll add my 2-3 cents in:

    “Annals of the Dragon”
    “Annals of the Drake”
    “Essence of the Dragon”
    “Essence of the Drake”
    “The Dragon’s Perception”
    “Perception of the Dragon”
    That was fun!
    Take care,

  10. Alice says:

Rick, the first thing that came to mind is Dragon Flight.

  11. The Dragons of Reality or Dragons of Reality come to mind
    Dragons In Reality
    Legends Of Reality
    Myths Of Reality
    The Legend Of Dragons
Yo! There Be Dragons Here! (just kidding on this one)

Thank you, everyone, who gave suggestions. Lots of participation and some good suggestions.

I should have mentioned it, but I was also wanting to avoid using the word “reality” in its various forms too. While set in the same world, I wanted this to be a new series, and the “Reality world” was not a name for the geographical location, just the outside story reference. And I felt I had played with that name enough, I wanted the new series to have its own identity, even though set in that world and having a few of the characters from that world in it. “Reality” had a certain meaning that applied to those stories, and while loosely it might fit here, would dilute the first books to continue using it. So that eliminated several of the suggestions.

Actually, last night, in looking over the various suggestions, I was leaning toward Annals of the Dragons, but perhaps doing more with it. But in researching and thinking, I came to the point that I was playing with the ideas of legend or myth of the dragons, which no one had suggested up to that point. After some thought, I was really leaning toward using legend.

Then Bryan Schmidt came through with that title, as if in confirmation of what I was thinking. So I will declare Byran Schmidt the winner of the contest, and I’ll be contacting him to arrange a copy of Reality’s Dawn be sent to him.

But, there are some other stories and games which use legend of the dragons, so I was thinking on that, and there is no way anyone here would know this since few have read the first book in the series, but I came up with an idea that I think makes it unique because it is unique to my story. So it won’t merely be “Legend of the Dragons,” but what I’ve settled on for the new title for the series is:

The Legend of the Dragons’ Dying Fields

A little longer than I would perhaps like, but I think it hits the right notes. In that world, the Dragons’ Dying Fields are a legend, it uses the key word “dragon” which is a popular topic, and it uses something unique to my world.

So, thanks for all the suggestions, and congratulations to Bryan Schmidt for winning a copy of Reality’s Dawn. And while whoever eventually publishes this may decide to change the name for the series, I like this title and think it fits and is a good hook.
